Local Hazards

Dog with porcupine quills

Porcupine Quills

Porcupines are common in Grand County. They are one of the best reasons to keep your dog in sight or on leash.

Giardia

Giardia are microscopic parasites in water that cause diarrhea. We have medicine for this!

Moose Encounters

Moose don't like dogs or people that come too close. Watch from a distance!

Fish Hooks

Our lakes and rivers attract many fishermen. Bait attracts dogs, and then they are hooked!

Mushrooms

Most mushrooms are mildly poisonous; a few are deadly. Teach your dog to "leave it!" and remove 'shrooms from dog yards.

Frostbite

Temperatures below zero are common here; your dogs' paws and ears are at risk. Don't leave your dog outside too long.

Skiing / Boarding

Sharp edges slice dog legs! We stitch several every winter.

Foxtails

Grass seeds stick in eyes, ears and tonsils. Don't let your dog eat our grass!

Rat / Mouse Poison

Rental properties and second homes may have poison out; be careful.

Snow Machine / ATV

Dogs get run over by these machines, as well as by cars.

Big Dog / Little Dog

Little dogs can be fatally injured by big dogs. Protect your little ones.
